From left to right: Alexi, Ruth, John & Bill
Studio manager and co-director of Crown Lane, John is an music producer with over 10 years hands-on experience recording, mixing and producing music across many genres, specialising in Jazz, Folk, and World. His love of all things sound, has been a life-long passion, and he holds an equal love of all things music technology alongside raw musical talent.
John graduated in 2002 from Canterbury Christ Church University with a 2:1 in Music (Audio Engineering and Percussion focus) and a PGCE teaching qualification in music. Alongside always working in music production, he has hosted creative music related training courses in many different countries from Bulgaria to Zimbabwe as well as managing UK music tours.
In July 2007 he ceased working as a music teacher at Cheam High School where he was both Head of Music Technology and a governor, to pursue his major passion in recording and producing music. He and his wife, Ruth (co-director) have put everything into making Crown Lane the home for musicians that it has become. In 2013, John won the Merton Borough Civic Award for Arts and Entertainment.
Outside of the studio, John is a dad of two boys, on the board of trustees for the Merton Chamber of Commerce, leads the local town centre ‘Love Morden’ initiative, and is on the board of trustees for Morden Baptist Church.
Bill has worked at Crown Lane since 2008, recording, editing and producing client projects. He is our in-house mastering engineer, and does an exceptional job at this.
He has a keen ear for music and pays great attention to getting the best sound from both instruments and singers. He is particularly focused on guitar and bass tone due to his personal experience playing and recording with these instruments.
Bill has been playing guitar, bass and singing in bands and studios since the 70s! This has included Festival, T.V and radio work. He is experienced in session playing on client projects at Crown Lane too.
Prior to working at Crown Lane and in addition to regularly gigging with a variety of bands, Bill worked in the I.T. industry for 20 years followed by work teaching adults I.T. as well as Maths and English at Kings College London and South Thames College.
Outside of the studio, Bill plays in covers band ‘Coast’ as guitarist and vocalist, and is heavily involved in fundraising for one of Crown Lane’s chosen charities, Zimkids.
Co-Director of Crown Lane, and wife to John, Ruth is both a people-person and logical organiser. Using her strengths, she makes sure the studio runs efficiently, and also keeps the studio engaged with the local community.
She runs the studio office, taking care of bookings, payments, and communications. Ruth also has the joy of championing the various community and charity events that Crown Lane are involved in, whether that’s with our partner organisations or chosen charities.
Outside of the studio, Ruth is mother of two boys, part of the ‘Love Morden’ initiative, a mentor (to young people), and in her spare time sings in a local choir!
If you need to make a booking, come and visit the studio, or find out how we can help you engage with music and the local community, Ruth’s your girl.
Alexi is Crown Lane’s studio assistant. You will most likely meet him if you book a midweek rehearsal session, or if we come to you for an ‘on location’ live recording project. He also works on editing some of our larger recording projects.
He is super friendly, organised and all-round lovely guy. Outside of the studio, Alexi likes to perform… He also works…
