Blues and Roots Ensemble
Inspiring young people in their appreciation of jazz is a challenge boldly accepted by Ed Babar. His recently formed Arts Council Funded Blues and Roots Ensemble champions the music of Charles Mingus. Crown Lane was brought in initially to record their debut live performance, and then more recently to create an interactive educational resource, allowing young people the opportunity to perform with a rhythm section.
For this project, we used the live room and the control room, with the drummer and pianist situated in the live room, and double bass in the control room with me. Using the piano in silent mode (but engaging the MIDI capabilities), all three sounds remain fully isolated, allowing any part to be solo’d at a later date, but all three musicians were able to respond to each other during the recording process with clear sight-lines. See the live recording video here.
