Vocal Mixing
- Identify the different vocals
- Loop the chorus section and put the backing vocals so you can focus on the lead
- Sculpt the vocal using Eq
- Sculpt the vocal using compression
- Consider using a de-esser to target sibilant sounds
- Consider using a noise gate to pull the vocal out of the mix when it isn’t playing
- Consider using saturation on the lead vocal
- Bring in the harmonies, revisit the levels and pan – switch between mono and stereo
- Consider gluing the vocal to the track a little more by sending a small portion to the ‘context’ reverb
- Create a vocal delay aux and call it Vox delay.
- Add a delay plugin to this aux
- Set your delay settings for something interesting and intentional
- Play around with the send amount of the vocal to this Delay aux
- Consider using this delay with the backing vocals
- Check the mix in stereo
