Vocal Mixing

Vocal Mixing

  1. Identify the different vocals
  2. Loop the chorus section and put the backing vocals so you can focus on the lead
  3. Sculpt the vocal using Eq
  4. Sculpt the vocal using compression
  5. Consider using a de-esser to target sibilant sounds
  6. Consider using a noise gate to pull the vocal out of the mix when it isn’t playing
  7. Consider using saturation on the lead vocal
  8. Bring in the harmonies, revisit the levels and pan – switch between mono and stereo
  9. Consider gluing the vocal to the track a little more by sending a small portion to the ‘context’ reverb
  10. Create a vocal delay aux and call it Vox delay.
  11. Add a delay plugin to this aux
  12. Set your delay settings for something interesting and intentional
  13. Play around with the send amount of the vocal to this Delay aux
  14. Consider using this delay with the backing vocals
  15. Check the mix in stereo
